( 30 ) TIME SKIPPING

. . . TIME SKIPPING FAQ
. . . . . If you wish to contact a mod, please do so here.

At the terminus of each game year, all characters within the game (with the exception of those who opt out through provided mechanisms) will go through a time skip forward. This mechanic is meant to help all characters who opt in to the timeskip to experience the game's metaplot over the scope of time intended.

How Long Could It Be?

The length of this time skip will be determined by player poll established two app-cycles before the event itself. One app cycle (two months) before the intended date of the timeskip, we will release two polls to players which will be open for one week each. The first will give the community to decide whether there should or should not be a timeskip. If the majority vote yes, the second poll will give options from 1 year, etc, to 5 years. Whichever vote wins will determine the length of time which passes!

For example, if the timeskip poll resulted in a timeskip duration of 5 years, then on on 01 April 2015, the beginning of the game's second ooc year, all new activity would be occuring between in-game characters as if they been in the drabwurld 5 years + the duration of months they had been in-game before the timeskip, while all new applicants would be joining a cast of other characters which had been established in the drabwurld for years. Mod posts will relay information on changes within the drabwurld during these years weeks in advance, and special posting areas would be made designated for character interaction in these timeskipped years.

Opt-Out Mechanisms

There will be multiple opt-out mechanisms for characters who do not desire to engage!

  • Enchanted Sleep - Your character simply falls into a Sleeping Beauty-esque enchanted sleep for the duration of the timeskip! Those who fall into an enchanted sleep within their respective castles shall be guarded 'round the clock by local guards.

  • Lost Between Fairy Rings - Your character simply vanishes from the world while traveling by fairy ring! On the date of the timeskip's completion, they simply step out of their destination fairy ring, having absolutely no knowledge that their trip was anything but instantaneous.

  • Fae Curse - Want to only miss bits and pieces of the timeskip? Your character could be fae-cursed by accidentally getting on the wrong side of a native fae! Be creative: perhaps your character falls asleep for a month if they sneeze, or when they hear a certain phrase.

  • White Hart's Touch - Perhaps the White Hart finds your character and gives them the gift(or punishment?) of living for a period of the timeskip as a woodland animal. Hard to do too much as a badger!

  • Canon Update - Need to canon update your character? You can do it now! This will function much like the enchanted sleep option.

  • Wildcard - Does your character canonically have the ability to timeskip or enter a type of stasis? They may use it for all or part of the timeskip! Alternatively, we're absolutely open to fairy tale-themed suggestions! Simply post your idea in the comment section below.

How Will This Work, Exactly?

Pending IC developments, and the result of the timeskip poll, the mod team will release an OOC post which will give all players a rough timeline of greater events in the drabwurld which occur during the timeskip: expect that they will not be much, as there will be NO new shardbearers, fairy rings will be de-activated, and it will be a period of relative peace with no major battles.

The mod team will release a timeline code to the game at large (though players are of course free to code their own!) with the intention that a page shall be used on each character's journal for logging their timeline of what happened during said timeskip. Players may use the comments of this page to log out events of the timeskip at their discretion, and these logs MAY be used to meet AC requirements. Depending on the length of timeskip selected, 2 or 3 months will be devoted to logging the events of the timeskip, and while the mod team will open specific logs in which individuals can begin logging the events of these years (which may happen concurrently to present-time events), players are also free and able to make their own properly-dated logs.

There will be no app-cycle for the month which begins the time-skip (April) so that characters already in-game can have enough time to adequately log timeskip events and to settle into their characters as they would be post-timeskip.

WILL THERE BE BOONS?

No boons or monthly events! Though there will still be minor issues rising in the drabwurld which characters can influence in similar style, it's entirely up to them to participate... for no stated reward.

CAN MY CHARACTER GAIN INFLUENCE OVER THE TIME SKIP?

As there's one month set aside for players to actually write out events of the timeskip, the Quest Request will be open with a special form for events taking place in the timeskip, allowing players to have their characters gain influence over the course of the timeskip. For players who believe their characters would realistically accomplish a larger rise in influence, please PM the mod team!

CAN I OPT OUT FOR PART OF THE TIME SKIP BUT NOT ALL?

Absolutely! We will post an OOC opt-out roster which will organize who is time-skipping for how long for all players to see.

hi mods! since uh, time is still passing but the shardbearers age slower anyway, i would probably have mako enter an enchanted sleep because i don't think i want to canon update him yet. but i am curious as to what would happen to rizhao, his dragon, while he's asleep? i assume she would keep growing, but that's a significant part of her development mako would be missing, however many years are being skipped. i know time incongruities are not uncommon in fairy lore but in the avatar-verse it's not uncommon at all for someone to visit the spirit world without being in their body for a disproportionate amount of time compared to the real world. if i come up with a reason (like, a secret monastery of dragon monks high in the mountains living away in hiding to protect the old lore or... something....) would i be able to have mako be able to contact rizhao and communicate with her through his sleep/meditation?

How would you like us to handle things such as characters attempting to gain their own land or more power during the timeskip that may need mod approval or NPC input? (For example, the Outsider would likely be working on gaining more followers in both the PC and NPC populations, having more shrines throughout the Drabwurld, maybe a nice houseboat or seaside residence; John would be working with Cyl to try and find parts of the Jabberwock, as they discussed; etc.)

Would monthly events still occur for the characters during the timeskip? I assume holidays such as Samhain would, but would they have to fight more giant worms? Deal with the trees deciding that they want to migrate? If so, would boons still be a thing and how would they be handled? Write up "character X would have asked for A, B, C, D"?

How would court influence be effected? Obviously some characters will try to have more influence or become better known during the timeskip; would they be applicable to go up in rank?

Could a character be opted out for part of the timeskip but not the entire duration? (I don't actually want to do this, I'm just curious.)

also just an fyi, the cut text says Quest & Influence Q&A

Your answer got a bit cut-off on #3, but as it's up on the page I'll let it slide ;)

The one question that occurs to me is the literal calendar itself. 1 October 2014 IRL is 1 October 2014 in the game. With the time skip, weekdays/weekends etc. won't sync up etc. Is there going to be a way to handle this or are we just going to assume that say 1 October 2015 on a Monday IRL is 1 October 201X on a Monday also applies to the game?

Regarding the poll for the time skip duration! If say 30% of people voted for no time skip but the remaining 70% voted between 1 and 5 years (say 10% for 1, 15% for 2, 10% for 3, 15% for 4, 20% for 5), would it come out to no time skip despite the fact that a majority of people actually voted for a time skip of some length?

BASICALLY: if the overall majority vote for some sort of timeskip but do not agree on the length, would it still lose to a larger percentage that voted for no timeskip?

Have you considered having two polls? One as a straightforward 'Timeskip or no timeskip' and then, if timeskip wins, a length-of-time poll?

[personal profile] oathshackledbird 2014-11-04 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
I just want to say I like this suggestion. I have seen times where polls become deadlocked or even go against what the majority wants because of people getting divided up over some detail (in this case, the length of time).

+1ing this since I know if I vote no I'd like to at least have a say wrt the time of the timeskip if the majority say yes and timeskip wins victor of these hunger games.

Also +1! This is basically why I asked in the first place, especially because if the majority wants a timeskip but just doesn't agree on length, there may be a "people who voted no kicked down our sandcastle just because" sort of feeling toward those who voted against having a timeskip at all.

Just chipping in that this is a good idea to implement for the reasons stated above.

I think a week should be okay, as long as there's sufficient advance notice beforehand, so that anyone who plans to take a hiatus or something knows that that is the week to vote, so they can make plans around it and such, if they need to.

I think a week for each would work, definitely! Though like Vynd said, with advance notice (like on the monthly calendar or something?) just in case.

A few of us were talking and thought the timeskip would be a bit longer, more like in decades to fit in the characters feel the passing of time thing. Could we have 10 years and 20 years options added to the poll, please?

[personal profile] gandere 2014-11-05 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
That makes a lot of sense, thanks for explaining why five years was the upper limit. As someone who plays a younger character who was hoping to mature them a bit further, I'd be interested in a higher number. That's just me personally (and mostly because I have my young teenager hanging out with a bunch of old folks), which isn't too much of a concern since I have other options available to me.

I think after this first timeskip, it would be interesting to have controlled time skips of longer times. Not gamewide perhaps, but I thought it could be neat if some city or region was isolated to speed up time so that while a month passes for the rest of the game, those inside might experience five years more. idk how practical that is, but I thought I'd toss the idea here.

Quest During the Timeskip

[personal profile] knightscode 2015-02-02 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally quests are one per mun per month!

For the timeskip, will it be one per mun per IC month (meaning 12 could theoretically be done over the year if someone bothered to write all that out) or will it be one per OOC month (meaning that they could only write out a quest during feb, march, april etc) or some cap for how many can be done during the timeskip?

I had assumed one per IC month meaning people could take a couple BUT I realised I never clarified this and don't want to assume wrong and give out 5 billion quests too many
knightscode: Do you remember when I was this young (Default)

[personal profile] knightscode 2015-02-03 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
All right! That probably DOES save a scramble for quests to be created and then logged out, in fairness!

(and saves 200 requests for 4/5 star quests with npcing over the timeskip sob)

[personal profile] gandere 2015-02-07 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
I can't recall if our timeskip plans need to be approved by mods in general, but I have several attempts on Rin's listing to counter the anti-Shardbearer movement in Aghmhor. While she's not doing this on her own, there are seven attempts total over the year that I would like to get mod approval for. Should I be sending a private message or will there be a post/comment thread for acceptances/rejections regarding this?

Thanks :)

[ROA]

So, doing the math--if Roa stays in Quendi for a solid year while doing research with his map given by Morla, that leaves him with a potential of 36 discoveries he can make from March to March. 36 is a lot! I still haven't compiled the previous discoveries he's made(nothing major. gold and some minor elemental spells), but 36 small or even 36 big discoveries could amount to a lot! I'd like to ask what kind of upper limit I could expect for Roa to be able to do with Quendi in a year. He kind of wants to kill the Prince and claim Quendi for himself, but that's entirely up to you, ze mods.

[Lancelot/Berserker]
Clockwork smithing is something he's going to learn from Gret! Since that's the last thing Gret hasn't taught him, yet. He wants to make prosthetics for children who lost their limbs... Letting you guys know in case you'd like to let folks know this is a thing. Also, he wants to use fairy magic to revitalize the land! I know of one of one other muse who wants to do this(Flora), but do you have any other takers?

[Lancer/Cu Chulainn]

Reputation boost!? Question in this case! Since he has a fortress with a lot of farm land, he's going to ICly be pushing for Seelie farmers/herders to make use of his abundance of protected land, especially after the Jabberwock's rampage. I'd like for Dun Dealgan to be found as a fairly prominent Seelie establishment for trade/industry/farming and I'd like to know if the mountains west of Caer Glaem would be good for mining ore in case they could expand into that industry as well!

timeskip boon qustions

[personal profile] jaywalks 2015-02-27 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
so i'm not sure if there was a better place to put this but, if we are allowed to thread the march and april "boon" month events out ahead of time, what's the exact procedure we're going to be following with their requests? i remember there being something said about more stringent rules for earning them but... i'm still rather lost on the what and the when.

thank you!

okay. also, as a general rule, should we assume the boons hat are earned during this time aren't going to be significantly effecting how a character is able to do things later in the timeskip? (i ask because i was hoping to see if mako can get a +1 power up for his teleporting ring before i threaded out certain events for the fall and winter)

hello! question about monarch contact!

i understand the monarchs are in contact with court leaders. does this include knights/necroveils, or just the four/five star rankers?
