( 4 ) BESTIARY/RACES

HOVER YOUR CURSOR OVER THESE KEYS | ϟ
BANDERSNATCH ✘✘✿

A species of bear, bandersnatches like to live in caves and stay in rocky forest areas. Dwarves have been known to ride these savage beasts which have two rows of sharp teeth and move determinedly, if at a reasonable pace, for many miles.

BEAN-NIGHE ✘☁★

A variety of banshee spirit who can be seen over rock-pools and by rivers, known as the "washer woman" because she is fated to scrub the bloodied garments of the slain. Despite this, bean-nighe is a sorrowful creature and easier to talk to than her wrathful sister the caoineag, whom the stories tell began screaming at her one night when she found her lover in bed with the bean-nighe. As penance for the murder of the man that came about during the three-way fight, she devotes herself to washing clothes of the dead as she once did with his. She will grant you one wish but only if you kiss her long ugly face.

BLACK SHUCK ✘✘✘✿ϟϟ★

Please refer to NPCs.

CAOINEAG ✘✘☁ϟ★

A variety of banshee spirit that wanders the world and unleashes a terrifying wailing where tragedy has struck. If she makes eye-contact with you and screams, you are in immediate grave danger, but otherwise she can be spoken to. She is less charitable than her sister the bean-nighe, however, and will not hesitate to attack any who comment on her hideous appearance by lifting them high into the air and letting them fall to their death.

CEFFYL DWR ✘☁♒

Horses made of mist and water, they can be found near mountain rivers and lofty pools where they descend to drink. They live in the clouds are are ridden by the slyphs at their leisure, also into battle. It is possible to ride one of these mounts if they harden their bodies enough, but beware of their idea of fun: they like to suddenly turn into mist when they get high enough.

CLEG ✘☁★

Air spirits that hide in the guise of insects, if angered they transform into an enormous winged horse and are stuck that way forever. While fierce combatants with hooves like black steel, they are not violent by nature but simply protective of their family. They have been known to make exceptionally loyal steeds, if tamed. This does not happen often.

DRAGON ✘✘✘☁ϟ★

A noble race of intelligent drakes, these beasts are capable of mind control with only a look into their eyes. Fashioned using the same primordial stuff which makes light and wind, their existence predates that of men. They are, for the most part, unaffiliated with any court and have little patience for those foolish enough to harm them. Any part of a dragon will fetch a high price on the black market, with many pieces highly prized in potion-work and smithing. While in some places it may be considered fashionable to have a young dragonling in ones service, their grown counterparts rightfully view it as kidnapping.

DRYAD ✘✘✿

Woodland hippies spirits who only leave their trees to dance naked and make merry. Beautiful but easily frightened, they disappear into their trees if startled or threatened yet if treated gently will gladly take male or female lovers, for when fully transformed into women they are said to have skin as soft as rose-petals and to be as sweet as richest sap, wanting nothing so much as to "share the love". Belonging to the Sisterhood of Nymphs, it is worth noting that not every tree has a dryad. Those that do are often full of life. Dryads only have brown, black and red hair, so blonde people are considered highly attractive to them.

DWARF ✘✿

A fairly insular people who are excellent stoneworkers and who have unparalleled knowledge of shards for non-shardbearers. The kingdom of Troichean Beinn is their home, though dwarves often travel elsewhere to practice their craft. Dwarves of both sexes often have beards, decorated with precious metals and stones. Technology created by dwarves is the most advanced in all Allaidh Darach.

ELF✘✿

Once a great kingdom now split into multiple clans ranging in size from a few hundred to less than a dozen, elves are considered children of the White Hart and few are as capable in the wilds as they. Each clan is self-ruling and has their own customs, traditions, and points of pride.

FAIRIES ✘✘☁

The most common of the aelfen species and widely recognised. The smallest of them, often called sprites, pixies, or wee folk only have room for one emotion at once and have been known to act capriciously. They are lovers of beauty, song and play and often do not understand how to take responsibility for some of the shit they pull off accidental problems they cause. Tricksters, at their worst they are an inconvenience and are naturally disposed to be kind. Reputedly, they are very helpful if you give them cake. They also exist in human sizes with more complex minds and personalities to match, and may be mistaken for other aelfen at first glance until they reveal their wings, which are deceptively hidden away when not in use. These fae can be found anywhere and may not strictly be of air element.

GIANT SPIDER ✘✿

Giant spiders come in two general types: hunters and web-spinners. Hunters rove about, while web-spinners usually attempt to trap prey. They have venomous bites which paralyse their prey, and have the ability to move in their surroundings utterly soundlessly.

GOLEM ✘✘✿

Made of rocks, grasses and trees, golems are the gentle giants of the Drabwurld. What they look like can widely vary, with some comprised of more boulders than other and their brothers nearly entirely built from bark. They are the keepers of the land and pay deference and fealty to the White Hart. If approached, they will remain silent and communicate by either nodding or shaking their great head, for when they do speak it is to bellow deafeningly and raise the alarm that enemies are near. The only time they are violent is when attacked first and return unforgiving blows.

IMP ✘✿

Smallest member of the goblin family, imps are never taller than shin-high and nasty by nature. They bite and scratch, curse and spit if disturbed, and are best squashed before they can rouse their fellows once easily angered. They often try to hack at ankles to bring people to their knees, at which point they eat them alive from the feet-up. Their grip is terrific. If you are brought to the Drabwurld by imps, you had best beat them off before they grow bored of their duty and decide you look like lunch.

KELPIE ✘♒

Preying on wildlife and cattle, kelpies are not overly dangerous water horses but should not be provoked. While often solitary, there are reports of the occasional organized hunt.

MERMAID ✘✘♒

All mermaids believe they are more beautiful than selkies, their one huge vanity. Aside from this, a mermaid will never drown a person unless insulted, at which point she calls her sisters to help (and you had better hope you have a fast ship or lots of land between you!) and is more likely to soak up flattery, assisting a sea-farer. They spend their time basking on the north-western islands and flirting with sailors.

NAIAD ✘♒

Occupying streams rivers and lakes, they belong to the Sisterhood of Nymphs. Naiads are the most extroverted of all nymphs and are always game for playing splash in the summer. In the winter season, they hibernate under the ice.

NISEAG ✘✘✘♒★

Denizen of the great western lake, commonly known as "Nessie", this sea-monster was trapped hundreds of years ago and lives there to this day. The reason there are so many cryptic sightings of her is that she eats anyone she stalks, allowing them to believe she will be friendly before devouring her prey.

ORC ✘✘✿

The most common of the goblins, orcs are common foot-soldiers and move in packs, eating anything they kill and killing anything they see. Listening to an orc is to invite lies.

PERYTON ✘✿☁

Mysterious beasts that are part stag, part bird, peryton are considered to be signs of change for good or for ill. Gentle but protective of the places they call home, peryton have the shadow of a human until they kill one; then, their shadow becomes their own. No one has trained a peryton to take a bridle, and it’s likely that no one ever will.

PUCA ✘▲☁

Nightmare horses of fire and air, puca are the only equine beasts that can speak the common-tongue of the Drabwurld. Their touch inspires fear and they know instinctively what most terrifies anyone unfortunate enough to stand in their company. They will assist you on the condition you can suffer through one "wild ride" on their back all night long. Many who have do not recommend what they gained afterwards to be worth the awful experience, which can range across entire realms and through active thunder storms in the sky where puca fly in herds like a black smog.

PYRII ✘✘▲

Volatile as the volcano they call home, pyriis can teleport via flame. It is all or nothing with this branch of the Sisterhood of Nymphs; they either care too much or leave you burned.

REDCAP ✘✘✿

Also known as brownies, waist-height, they are an exceptionally blood-thirsty member of the goblin family most often seen after a battle or a bloody fight, trampling corpses in iron boots and dying their hats in blood. They carry sharp axes and are willing to attack unprovoked, as a redcap will die once the colour of its hat fades and it must be continually replenished.

SANDWORM ✘✘✿ϟ★

Sandworms normally stay underground. When they feel creatures on the ground above them or when they feel creatures using the tunnels they have left behind, the creature's fight-or-flight mechanism takes over. Sandworms start combat by creating an earthquake, making an intense but highly localized tremor rip the ground. Native to the troll lands, though they may be found in other arid locations.

SEA MONSTER ✘✘✘♒ϟ★

With vast oceans come great denizens, dangerous and fantastic. Sea monsters of the Drabwurld range from sea serpents to kraken. Some prey on ships, others on whales, but all are dangerous.

SELKIE ✘✘♒

Selkies are half-woman, half-seal and have been known to set up home in large lakes as well as the sea. They are not as vain as mermaids but twice as dangerous and one of the fae who should actively be avoided. They like to talk to handsome men and are outright violent to women. It is not a secret that selkies sometimes steal human men for their husbands, only to devour them once they grow bored or ... unsatisfied.

SHELLYCOAT ✘♒

Also called grindylows. These bog-monsters like to prank people by imitating the calls of drowning children in order to lure them in. As annoying as they are, they do not eat people.

SYLPH ✘☁

The only time a sylph comes down from the clouds is when mist and fog lies thick on the ground. Otherwise not much is known of them, though they are solemn and difficult to talk to given their airy nature and detachment from the land below. They belong the the Sisterhood of Nymphs.

TOWERSHELL ✘✘✘✿♒ϟ★

A blanket term for enormous turtles and tortoises, towershells hatch no larger than a regular turtle. However, these beasts grow extremely quickly, at times causing small famines and natural disasters due to their appetite and large size upsetting the area. Most are killed when young, either for food or for safety, but a towershell that is tamed and trained can be anything from a moving home to a siege tower in war… as long as you aren’t in much of a hurry.

TROWES ✘✘✿★

A blanket term for trolls and ogres, the largest and most stupid of the goblin family. Rarely do they come down from the mountains where they keep goat and horses, and only then to find manflesh for a little variety in their diet. They are too dull-witted to be reasoned with and a number of them are kept as guards by those who have somehow managed to convince them to stand in one place long enough.

UNICORN ✘✘✘ϟ✿

A cousin of the cleg, unicorns are pristine white with golden manes and a single golden horn. Foals are pure gold until they reach maturity and are defended protectively by the whole herd. Unicorns are predisposed to feel more comfortable around individuals with pure hearts and are considered to be the princes of horses, stallion or mare, with no bias as to the gender of anyone who approaches them. They are peaceful beasts unless using their vicious horn to hunt for meat and become fearsome steeds if ridden into battle, though they only deign to bear the wearer of a crown.

VAMPIRE✘✘✿

Considered children of the Black Shuck, vampires in the Drabwurld are often taxed wherever they go due to their need to consume the blood of others. Like the elves, they were once part of a great kingdom and have split among themselves into several clans.

WEREWOLF✘✘✿

Once bitten by an alpha werewolf, its victim is no longer considered elf or human or orc but instead a werewolf themselves. These beings can live as they once did if they are used to the pull of the moon, but many embrace their bestial nature and treat the world as one massive hunting ground. Alpha werewolves can speak with and control wolves, using them as their eyes and ears.

WHITE HART ✘✘✘✿ϟϟ★

Please refer to NPCs.

WILL'O THE WISP ✘✘☁

Shy little spirits, will'o appear when a traveller is lost or close to despair. These kindly fae will lead people one of two ways: to where the person wants to go or to where they should go. Their reputation for mischief comes as a result of not stopping to ask which is preferred. The will'o are said to have once been a lost band of brothers who died in the mists of the lowlands. Their devotion to finding each other was so strong that they were turned into air spirits, sympathetic to others who find themselves astray. They will ask your name after they have assisted you and will remember you are their friend, should you freely give it.
