PLANS The war will be amping up, and participation in the first major battle will leave Alyosha wrong-footed at first, before her innate pragmatism grinds at her enough that she begins to reorganise and restructure her resources. She will take many mercenary jobs and travel the drabwurld with her troops over the course of Spring and Summer, often with many of her shardbearer friends and acquaintances in tow. Many of these missions will have significant political implications and undertones. This period of adventuring will also act as her last hurrah before she knuckles down to parenthood, and adopts two children roughly in Sept/Oct. She will turn over visible leadership of her company to her right hand, Diarmuid, and begin an aggressive series of behind-the-scenes political power plays which should be just rolling out by the May 2,702. Politically beneficial marriage may wind up being involved. The timeskip will represent a transition by which Alyosha will withdraw into a more background role, consolidating influence through various avatars and a deep network of contacts spanning both courts, and the resume to gametime will herald her opening play to begin effectively crippling the courts.
SUMMARY OF KNOWN DETAILS Alyosha will, over the course of timeskip:
✖ engage in a magical bond with Diarmuid
✖ increase her wealth by taking high-risk mercenary opportunities
✖ here and there tutor and keep the care of Rin's young heir
✖ adopt two beebins and yield control of her mercenaries in favor of getting more domestic
✖ may wind up tutoring other kids in the bargain?
✖ may wind up gaining power and influence via... marriage?
✖ will go to Samhain & a few other festivals
✖ can teach shardbearers how to activate/use their shard

And, naturally, a large portion of both elves and vampires want to continue the conflict; at least as many as those who don't. Those populations are thousands large; the differences of opinion are as varied as the spectrum of colours. Moreover, they are among the longest-lived races in the drabwurld, generally both moneyed and powerful.
I've said to others that I believe that the killers were, in fact, elves, seeking to re-fan the fires of the conflict for political leverage by which to oust the human King their prior shardbearer rulers left them. The elven clans rallied together and set aside ancient enmity to follow a charismatic shardbearer prince; the kingdom they've built isn't yet two years old. And now some human man who knows nothing about their culture or ways, their history, means to be king to them?
[ She snorted, waved a hand. ]
If it were vampir politics, he'd have been found with his eyes out, first morning. But elves are known for their grace and subtlety... in all things.

[ But he stops himself, remembering the apostate who destroyed Kirkwall's Chantry, sentencing his brothers and sisters to death. And, he remembered Meredith, eager to kill not just him, but anyone else that stood in her way, all in the name of a cause. ]
--It seems that no matter what world, there are always those that will go through any lengths for their causes, regardless of the consequences. Your theory-- does make a degree of sense.
[ And he frowns. ]
Is their King a shardbearer as well? I cannot imagine anyone being truly content under foreign leadership, regardless of the intention. [ He thinks to his history, to Ferelden that was once conquered by Orlais. ]
It is hardly my place to push myself into this conflict, but it seems to me that these murders might indicate something far more sinister at work.

Their king was once a shardbearer, yes. Brought in recently, I understand, only a few months term spent in the drabwurld. Compared to the elves themselves, who don't even reach... an age the elves consider maturity for 'nigh on a century.
It is my belief that your suspicions are correct: that these slayings implicate a far larger political network. What members of the guard may know or suspect more no doubt have kept the matter quiet so as not to stir that pot. So to speak. I've no ken for the nature of your far world, shardbearer, but...
The drabwurld has been eternally at war. Its politics are ruthless. The killings of a few are drops in the proverbial bucket. Even if you find the killers, executing them under Seelie authority could invite another front to the war. What if it was noble families in Treun? The Cult of the Fox? Vampir elders? Elven lords?
Could you stomach those consequences?

[ Then again, he's not one for politics, and could hardly offer any solid suggestions of his own.
He frowns, carefully considering his words before speaking. ]
Justice should be served, regardless of the culprit. Is the Seelie code not "death before dishonour"? It seems to me that dropping this entire investigation because it might not lead to a perfect outcome would be in violation of that very code. At the least, I have a responsibility to protect those in need, and even if the culprits cannot be punished directly, I will strive to ensure the safety of others.
[ Which... was not the only reason he felt the need to pursue this. But, he cannot exactly say that he trusts this woman enough to say much more. ]
Especially when they may not be able to protect themselves.
[ Seelie or Unseelie would forever remain unsaid. ]

'Death before dishonour' can mean a dozen different things to a dozen different people. Honour comes in more than one flavour. And loyalty. A hypothetical for you: a noble lady comes across some information, that other nobles, ostensibly her allies, plan a political coup on another lesser noble to depose him. For some moral reason, let's say; that he overtaxes his people to near starvation and is known to sell debtors into slavery, but all by legal means.
But one of her children, a beloved son, is fostered with this man, as all the lesser sons of nobles are often given to each other, so that young men in power learn the lands they will influence.
What does she do? Warn the lord, because though he is disagreeable to the moral tastes of many, he is still within the law... but in so doing, betray her allies? Warn him to guard her son from any harm, and so betray her allies? Not warn him, remain faithful to her allies, but knowing that the coup itself is unlawful though morally correct, and her child may perish in the fighting?
[ It sounds, perhaps, a little too familiar in her voice, as if the hypothetical isn't a hypothetical at all, but might be pulled from her past. ]
What would you do, Guard-Captain? What are the flavours of your morality? Your honour? Your duty? How much of yourself would you sacrifice for these things... and when the blood was shed and you stood alone at the end, could you live with yourself?

In his mind, it all sounded dreadfully Orlesian, and he frowns again, deep in thought. ]
It says that nobles will play their games. Soon enough, he'd have a commoner's rebellion on his hands, regardless of the woman's actions. In my mind, it would have been better not to foster the son to a known slaver in the first place. Does she only have those two options? Is there not another way to rescue her son?
[ There were so many variables that one could go mad, agonizing over whether they had done the right thing or not.
And he thinks of what Lavellan-- Nasrin said to him: "Remember that you too, are also worth fighting for". It had been something he'd long since struggled with, from his blind devotion to Meredith, turning a blind eye to the crimes committed in the Gallows, to the Inquisition, and worrying that he still had not given enough.
Now, the stakes seemed even higher, and while they'd both assured one another that they would find another way, there was lingering doubt, still.
Nevertheless... ]
I will always sacrifice what is needed, and it will be of my own free will.
[ Even if it means death. So long as Nasrin was on the opposite side of the conflict, he knows he would not be left standing. ]
no subject
[ She tipped her chin up. ]
You can't choose between evil and evil, in the dark, by logic. You can only cling to some safety line of principle.
Speak to the elves, Guard-Captain. I have forewarned you enough.
no subject
Of course, it always comes back to this war.
[ He thinks of the Shuck-- who spoke of the end of All Things, and could have devoured him in an instant. He thinks of what Nasrin told him, of the Seelie's desire to reshape the world and begin it all anew. And mostly, in his heart he knows that there must be another way.
He bows to her, preparing to take his leave. ]
Thank you for your assistance, Lady Red-Hand. You've given me-- much to think on. Perhaps we may speak again under less dire circumstances.
no subject
Call on me, should you have need to shed red; and may your sword never dull.
[ She bowed in turn, and let him leave in silence. ]
